1992 (Hecho en Venezuela)

Mil Novecientos Noventa y Dos (Hecho en Venezeula (acyrilic on canvas) - SOLD
In 1991-92 I spent the best part of a year living in Caracas, Venezuela. This painting was inspired by that time, during which I became heavily influenced by the mad, brash colours of the local folk art. The characters in the piece are Hugo Chavez (the current president of Venezuela), who led a failed coup attempt that year and was jailed, and Milka Chulina, Miss Venezuela 1992. The beer is Polar, the national brew and a more reliable drink than the local water.

Things used to break down a lot - the people would simply shrug and say “Hecho en Venezuela” (made in Venezuela).

Sadly this was the last year my beloved Leeds United tasted glory, champions of the old Division 1 in 1992 - and I missed it all.
